girlfriend getaways, travel deals

~Shared by J. Ranner

As I start my 15th year of employment at Woodloch Pines Resort (how time flies), time after time I’ve heard guests simply refer to the resort as “HOME.”

And as a sweet Midwestern girl with ruby red slippers once said, “There’s no place like home.”

How fitting, then, that during Wednesday mornings throughout the summer of 2013, you will be whisked away by a whirlwind of fun with our all-new “Oz” games by the lake. “It’s timeless, really. The movie and the book offer a great story to all ages and tastes,” says Social Director (and “Man Behind the Curtain”) Joey Ranner. “So why not incorporate the love that we share into some great games?”

In case you are a Woodloch rookie, Wednesdays in the summer host a new type of theme game on the shores of Lake Teedyuskung every year.  In the past, we’ve pushed the adrenaline with “Fear Factor,” saluted Hollywood’s biggest movies with our “Blockbuster Games” and even paid tribute to real-life heroes with our “Firefighter Games” and “Police Games.”

Planning for this year’s festivities started months ago. Since then, the Woodloch team has been had at work trying to get things just right. “We either go big or don’t go at all,” says Ranner. “With every game that we do, things have to be new, they have to look good, and most importantly, they have to be FUN.” After months of brainstorming, drafting, and ultimately crafting  the new games, “Oz” is ready for its summer run.

So to shake things up, this year’s games will follow the Yellow Brick Road to great times with family and friends.  The Social Staff have crafted 6 unique relay events that take elements from the beloved movies and add the thrill of competition. This year, guests can expect:

  • Working together to pave a Yellow Brick Road of your own
  • Helping the Scarecrow put himself back together again
  • Using the natural resources of the lake to bring justice to that Wicked Witch…
  • Tracking down ruby red shoes…
  • Flying high with bellman monkeys
  • Enjoying delicious Oz treats with “munchkins!”

And it simply wouldn’t be our Theme Games without a little bit of flair. The Social Staff will be running these games in the full costumes of your favorite Oz characters- but that’s all we will say about that.

So when you do click your heels three times this summer, you’ll be magically transported somewhere over the rainbow to the Emerald City of Woodloch

And so we've reached the epic conclusion of our three-part series on all the great reasons you have to visit us this summer. If the first two articles weren't enough to convince you that you need a Woodloch getaway this summer, as they say in the old country, "third time's the charm."

RECORD BREAKERS FIELD DAY- One of Woodloch's oldest and proudest traditions is based on good ol' fashioned competition. I see it in all of your eyes when you're vying for a gold medal at our Scavenger Hunt and everywhere else. And to be quite frank, I'm somewhat scared to stand in anyone's way.

So with that in mind, Woodloch will be presenting you with the chance to not only trump your family and friends but also every guest that walks through our doors this summer! Look for even more exciting details on this event coming soon... there's some EPIC news that we can't wait to share with you!

WOODLOCH'S GOT TALENT- Are you an aspiring songbird or musician? Are family and friends floored by your improv stand up comedy shows at gatherings? Or can you juggle cricket bats blindfolded? Whatever your "talent" - no matter how unique it may be - now is your chance to shine. This summer, we invite you to showcase your skills in front of an audience of 500 or more spectators! Start rehearsals and shake off that stagefright. This could be the big break you've been waiting for!

WOODLOCH KID'S CLUB ROOM- Our Boomer's Kids Club and activities keep expanding, and we needed some room to branch out! Starting this summer, many of our children's activities will be hosted in our new Kid's Club Room located just below our gymnasium and indoor playground. Events like arts & crafts, story hour and other various games now have a specially designated room!

A NIGHT AT THE COUNTRY FAIR- It's a warm summer's eve. You hear the sweet sound of an acoustic guitar and fiddle off in the distance singing along with the crickets. The delicious smell of funnel cake wafts through the soft night breeze. And in the company of your best friends, you meander throughout the midway without a care in the world. You're at a good old-fashioned country fair; Americana at its finest!

This summer, Monday nights will feature Woodloch's Country Fair. Enjoy all of those carnival  delicacies like candy apples, cotton candy and kettle corn. Bow to your partner and corners as we "dosey doe" to some great honkey tonk country music! And craft to your heart's delight!

mountain resorts, girlfriend getaway

HANG TEN! (kind of) - Paddleboards are becoming more popular and will now be available to our guests this summer at Woodloch! Paddleboards strengthen and stretch the muscles in your arms, torso and legs.  Guests will have to be 13 and older to use them. This will be a great new way for you to explore the tranquil waters of Lake Teedyuskung. Meanwhile, enjoy our extended walking path wrapping around the lake side of our outdoor pool!

BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER- Our Social Department at Woodloch absolutely LOVES a challenge. That's why our traditional guest favorite events like Olympics, Scavenger Hunt, Amazing Race and more will be given complete makeovers! So even if you think you're ahead of the game- believe me when I say you're not. We will challenge your minds and bodies and bring the fun level to unprecedented highs!

And so, with less than two months until Independece Day, may the countdown for the summer of 2013 commence!

We simply cannot wait to share all of the fun, joy and laughter with you!

Anyone who has been to Woodloch Pines Resort in the Poconos knows that summer time means getting drenched. Whether it’s the suds tub in Double Dare or big splashes on our 30+ foot water slide into our private lake, Woodloch has enough water fun to trump the term water park . . . It's more like a WATER WONDER WORLD!

Splashes in the Poconos

Here are just a few of the water activities that you can expect to get soaked in:

  • A year-round indoor Kid’s Splash Zone complete with water guns, mini-slides, bubbles, fountains and everything the youngest in your group will love.
  • Newly renovated for 2012 is our outdoor swimming pool complete with our brand new outdoor bar and grill!
  • Bumper boats provide all the fun of catching family and friends off guard while squirting them with water!
  • With so many docks to jump off of and so much sand to play in, our beach front makes for the perfect lake vacation! Activities available at our beach front include: kayaking, canoeing, sail boating, paddle boating, row boating, water skiing, boat rides, and more!
  • Even on rainy days, you can splash around in our indoor heated pool complete with water basketball and a shallow end for new swimmers.

Inside Information: Build a Winning Woodloch Scavenger Hunt Team!

reunions, class trips

One of Woodloch's most challenging medal events is, and always will be, our Family Scavenger Hunt. Typically, teams of approximately 12 players go head-to-head in a trial of physical prowess, knowledge, and of course scavenging abilities! While we never simply give away answers for our hunts, we can supply your team with a few tips and pointers to give you a competitive advantage (or at least keep you from finishing dead last :P).

So, without further ado, here it is!

  1. Team "Variety"- The best teams for the hunt tend to be quite diverse! Intelligent beings, superior athletes, and even younger children all bring different skills to the table, and you would be wise to have a little bit of everything!
  2. Equipment- Unlike other events, such as Name That Tune, the use of laptops, tablets and phones is perfectly legal and even necessary to a degree!
  3. Cardio- Be ready to RUN for almost an hour straight! Eat a good breakfast and wear sneakers! You snooze, you lose!
  4. Research- While we NEVER just "give" away hints or item listings, you can win them by checking and successfully winning our games! Also, pay attention to the photo galleries for even more hints.
  5. Solid Leadership- Your team captain needs to be able to efficiently delegate tasks and RALLY your team's spirit! Absolutely essential!
Remember, if this happens to be your first visit to Woodloch, the campus is HUGE. We will be sending you scrambling across all 135 acres! The more experience your team gains, the better your chances of obtaining the coveted medals!
So take these tips, pay us a visit, and show us what your made of!

Time is a funny thing. Passage of it has never been consistent, at least to me. Sometimes, I would watch the second hand of the clock crawl almost to a halt as I would be counting away the minutes until my weekend would start. But more often than not, the opposite is true: time goes by way too fast, and the next thing you know the years are in your rearview mirror.

Perhaps this is shown most prevalently through the growth of our children. One minute it seems they are running wildly around without a care in the world, and the next they are calling you from college to say how much they miss you... and that they need to be spotted a few dollars. We can all agree that no matter how much time you may think you may have with your kids, it will go by quickly and unfortunately be over with before you know it. That's just a fact of life that there isn't any getting around.

golf resort, reunions

However, here at Woodloch, we are memory makers: a producer of durable memories and industrial strength bonding agents. We pride ourselves in not only offering a plethora of activities to make children happy but to also include parents in on the fun- here, we give you the opportunity to have FUN with your kids! We encourage parents to actively participate in events with their kids:

  • Help your kids as they create a special arts and crafts project
  • Splash around at our pool complex
  • Cruise along our go-kart track with your child as a passenger
  • Hop in a paddle boat and explore Lake Teedyuskung
  • Enjoy world-class entertainment from the likes of magician Jay Mattioli or the famous Hilby.
  • Compete with them in our Olympics or Double Dare events for a chance to win the Woodloch gold medal!
And the list goes on and on- the stage is set for you to have many happy times here with your children. Ultimately, though, it is on you to follow through. Carpe diem. Take the initiative to make the most out of the time you have with your kids before they aren't so little anymore! The door is open... all you need to do is walk through!

Prepare for Battle - Paintball Adventures Invade Woodloch!

Perhaps the best thing about being a child is the fact that your life and career goals are wide open. You can literally be ANYTHING! Your imagination leads you to believe that being a princess or a Jedi knight aren't fantasies but career options (I, for one, longed to be Batman). Then somewhere along the line reality sets in, and most of us give up on these occupational dreams, which is a bummer.

Yet this cloud of reality has a silver lining, and it can be found right here in Hawley. At Woodloch Pines Resort, it's perfectly acceptable (and some might say encouraged) to revert to your inner eight-year-old. Woodloch's newest activity, our Paintball Adventures, appeals to the soldier, cowboys, and cops and robbers within all of us!

Though we have offered target shooting with paintball guns for years at our Shooting Barn, 2012 marks the first time that we will be offering outdoor competitive play. Situated amidst a scenic Pocono backdrop on our upper athletic field are obstacles that provide plenty of cover against enemy fire, yet a team needs to aggressively advance if they have any desire to win one of our three types of games.

  • In our SPEEDBALL competition, your team starts at one end of our field and your opponents begin at the opposite. Players must attempt to cross to the opposing team's base without getting shot.
  • The classic CAPTURE THE FLAG event has players infiltrating enemy territory to secure their flag, and bring it back across the line to your home base.
  • And last but not least, SURVIVOR (or ELIMINATION) is an all-out battle until the end. The last player standing takes the win for their team!

All games will be arranged so that players of different sizes, strengths and athletic abilities can play competitively!

Beginning Memorial Day Weekend, this event will be offered as both a tournament for the coveted Woodloch gold medal, or as a private competition for an additional fee. This newest adventure has been something guests have been asking about for years, and we are just as excited as you are to finally be able to offer this! Behind all of the adrenaline-fueled fun are elements of teamwork, strategy and communication, which also makes this activity a great team-building opportunity

So get your G.I. Joe collection out of storage, dust off your old cowboy hat, and throw on your ghillie suit because The Great Battle of Hawley will be lasting all summer long!

Pocono activities

One of the first years I actually consciously remember was 1995. Although the year of course featured the world debut of Buzz Lightyear and Cal Ripken Jr. smashing a baseball record, my best memories from that year all stem from the wonderful MUSIC that had been released. This was the first year in my life in which I actually grew an appreciation for the art. Yes, I went "chasing waterfalls" with TLC, only wanted to be with Hootie and the Blowfish, and became a complete "basket case" for Green Day. This was the year that propelled me to being a true music lover.

Over my 14 year tenure at Woodloch, I've met many guests who share my passion. The great thing about our resort is that you can put your musical appreciation and palattes to the test in one of our featured "Name That Tune" competetions. In this game, we span many different generations and genres of music to see which team has the best musical chops. Though I could NEVER share any inside information to help your team get a leg up in the contest, I thought I would recommend some resources and helpful techniques for you to get yourself ready:

1. Online Music Services- many of these are free, and offer you a great opportunity to broaden your listening horizon. Recently, a free program called Spotify seems to have taken the web by storm. With limited commercial interruptions, you can listen to literally hundreds of thousands of tracks on demand. Alternatively, internet radio stations like Pandora not only offer free streaming music but can also adjust your playlists based on your personal tastes. And like all great things in life, there's a mobile app for your iPhones, Blackberries, cherries, grapes and etc. I find both of these sites very good at helping you connect what you hear with a name/band.

2. Publications- although newspapers and magazines are becoming less and less commonplace in this wonderful digital age, they can still keep you up to beat with what's hot and trendy in the music industry.  Publications like SPIN and Rolling Stone are great for stories, but Billboard Magazine gives a statistical rundown on the country's hottest tracks.

3. Quiz Websites- in my opinion, this is the best way to get yourself ready. Namely, a gaming site named Sporcle features quizzes that will test your mental reflexes and condition you to be able to name that tune in a matter of seconds. There's a great variety here so I encourage you to practice, practice, practice!

4. Friends- and last but not least, when assembling your team, choose wisely and don't underestimate people. Play to everyone's strengths. For instance, while I love classic rock and alternative music, I am completely in the dark on many of todays pop hits. That's where having a teammate like my 13 year-old-sister would come in handy. A good diverse team is usually a strong one!

And that's all the tips I'm willing to share with you. Of course, you can always visit THE EDGE for a chance to win hints at the games. So please study up, come on back, and play some "Name That Tune" with us. And impress us with what you've learned!
