They seem so innocent at first. Tiny and delicious confectionary delights that are as pleasing to the eye as they are to the palette. But make no mistake: our competitive nature has a way of changing sugar, spice, and everything nice into a full-on, hold-nothing-back war for supremacy and bragging rights.
Such were the guiding principles behind Woodloch's first ever "Cupcake Battle." Eight teams of 6-8 players of all ages were tasked with crafting unique and creative cupcakes, with the desire to earn the Woodloch gold as the guiding force. Through 3 rounds of battle, each "bakery" was tasked with creating cupcakes centered around a specific theme. Ingredients like frosting, licorice, chocolate shavings, pretzels and sprinkles were provided to jazz up each cake. Teams also had to incorporate a "special ingredient" for each round. At the conclusion of the round, bakeries were judged on display, following the theme, creativity, use of ingredients, and overall cleanliness on a scale from 1 to 5. The highest score from each round walked away with the coveted Woodloch gold!
In addition to testing each teams artistry and kitchen skills, this contest also did a fine job of promoting solid teamwork and communication- the 20 minute time frame for each round forced teams to work together in an effort to achieve their goals. This was an ideal situation for many of the Girl Scout troops that shared the weekend with us- and there efforts were commended with a special badge at the conclusion!
So after all the clamor and stress of a tough morning in the kitchen, was it all worth it? "Everyone walked away with a smile on their face," says Social Staff member Eric Ranner. "And a little bit of icing, too!"
